80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JAPANESE CANADIAN INTERNMENT – HONOURING OUR JC SURVIVORS.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the uprooting of Japanese-Canadians during the Second World War from British Columbia, we will host a reception luncheon to honour the survivors that reside in the greater Victoria area for their strength, stoicism, and resiliency in overcoming adversity.
We believe it is important that the survivors be recognized and honoured not only by their families, but also the broader Nikkei community. We have identified 30 survivors in our region and anticipate attendance at our Anniversary Luncheon to be approximately 80 persons; attendees will include (30) identified survivors, their partner or guest, close relatives and members of the greater Victoria Nikkei community. The event will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 (this is a tentative date that will be confirmed in 2022). In addition to the luncheon meal, there will be a guest speaker, cultural entertainment (Taiko and Koto performances) and story-telling by some of the survivors. The proposed location is the Hotel Grand Pacific, Victoria, B.C. Decorations will reflect mid-twentieth century Canadian Nikkei history with emphasis on the pre-Second World War time through the internment period of 1942-1949 and the immediate years following. We will provide, where necessary, transportation and assistance for survivors to attend the event. Our goal is to honour the Issei, Nisei and Sansei that were affected and to recognize the living survivors.
