Grants Available:

Only one application is required for both Grants

Grant 1: $650

For Survivors who did not receive the 2021 Survivors Fund Grant that was offered between September 1 to October 31, 2021.

Grant 2: $4500

A new grant for living Survivors to support their individual health and wellness needs.

Eligibility:

Eligible applicants for both Grants 1 and 2 must meet ALL of the following requirements:

  • be of Japanese descent
  • be born before April 1, 1949
  • have lived in BC before April 1, 1949 OR had parents or grandparents who lived in BC before April 1, 1949
  • have been directly impacted by the actions of the BC government before April 1, 1949

For Grant 2, additionally:

  •  On or after February 1st, 2024, the Survivor must be alive at the time of submitting the application (online or through an Outreach Worker)

Document Preparation:

To validate your application please locate the following documents:

  • Personal identification (e.g. birth certificate, passport, a picture ID)
  • Birthdate before April 1, 1949
  • Proof of current mailing address (e.g. Driver’s License, recent credit card statement, utility bill)

DO NOT send the Society any personal documents by email or mail for your protection.

How to Apply:

  • To have your application validated, you can attend one of our in-person events (see our Events page) or wait for an Outreach Worker to contact you to make other arrangements

After applying:

The next step after making your application is to have your application validated by an Outreach Worker.

This can be done by attending an in-person regional event (see our Events page), attending a virtual video validation appointment or if neither of those options are available to you, Outreach Workers can help facilitate alternate arrangements like a site/home visit or the completion of a Notary/Guarantor form (process pending).

What is required to have your application validated:

  1. The Outreach Worker needs to see the applicant in-person or over a virtual video call 
    • If the applicant is not able to attend or be seen on a virtual video call, these two options are also available:
      • A signed letter on letterhead from the care facility they are residing at stating the applicant is a resident there
      • A statement from the current month from the care facility that the applicant is residing at
      • A completed Notary/Guarantor Form (the process for this is pending, please contact your Outreach Worker if you need this option)

2. Two pieces of the applicants ID, with at least one piece being photo ID. These pieces of ID will be used to verify the your identity, that your birthdate is before April 1, 1949 and your address

  • Birth Certificate - if you have a copy of your birth certificate, please bring this. It is not required if it has been lost or misplaced, as long as the date of birth is on another document
  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • Health Card
  • Provincial Identification Card
  • Statement or bill (e.g. utility bill)

3. If the cheque is being requested to be mailed to the Power of Attorney, we will need to see:

  • the Power of Attorney
  • Power of Attorney's ID with proof of residence (e.g. driver’s license, health card and/or utility statement)
  • Power of Attorney legal documents

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THE MAILING ADDRESS

  • Cheques can only be delivered to the Survivor's mailing address or the legal Power of Attorney's mailing address ***No other arrangements can be made***
  • Cheques will only be made payable to the Survivor's legal name

After your application has been validated:

  • A cheque will be sent by mail 10-12 weeks after your application has been validated
