Events

Outreach Workers are hosting events across Canada to provide information, application assistance for those applying for the first time and to validate applications.

If you have made an online application, the next step is to have your personal documents validated.

Options for validation:

  1. Make an appointment at a regional event - scroll down for regional event details. Click the + button on the right side of the event date to see more event details and the Outreach Worker to RSVP to
  2. Schedule a virtual validation (video call) with an Outreach Worker in your region

Event Requirements

1. Schedule an appointment: Click on the + sign beside the event you'd like to attend to find the event details and Outreach Worker contact information to RSVP to for an appointment time

2. Outreach Workers will request to see the applicant in-person at an event OR

    • A representative of the applicant can bring the applicant's ID and one of the following:
      • A signed letter on letterhead from the care facility they are residing at stating the applicant is a resident there
      • A statement from the current month from the care facility that the applicant is residing at
      • A complete a Notary/Guarantor Form (process pending)

3. Two pieces of the applicants ID, with at least one piece being photo ID.

These pieces of ID will be used to verify your identity, that your birthdate is before April 1, 1949 and your address:

  • Birth Certificate - The best method to validate Roots in BC is your original British Columbia Longform Birth Certificate (original document with official seal only).  This document includes the names of your parents.
    If you have your original BC Longform Birth Certificate, please contact your Outreach Worker directly to confirm that it has been included as part of your application.  You may also contact our JCSHWF General Phone/Toll-free phone or email (listed here).  This will speed up the processing of your application.
  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • Health Card
  • Provincial Identification Card
  • Statement or bill (e.g. utility bill)

4. If the cheque is being requested to be mailed to the Power of Attorney, we will need to see:

  • the Power of Attorney
  • Power of Attorney's ID with proof of residence (e.g. driver’s license, health card and/or utility statement)
  • Power of Attorney legal documents

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THE MAILING ADDRESS

  • Cheques can only be delivered to the Survivor's mailing address or the legal Power of Attorney's mailing address ***No other arrangements can be made***
  • Cheques will only be made payable to the Survivor's legal name

5. All event attendees will be asked to complete a Survivor Contact Form with your basic information regardless of whether you are applying for the first time or have already made an application.
